BEST PRACTICE 1
Analysis of Blood Group, Hemoglobin and Blood Donation
Objective of the Practice
1. The objective of this study is to determine the biological, nutritional and socioeconomic risk factors for anemia in rural school children and adults.
2. To create awareness about the scientific information about blood groups.
3. To create digital blood group data of college students.
4. To sensitize the importance of blood donation among the students.
The Context
More than 75% of the rural school children and adults are anemic and are devoid of blood grouping knowledge. Due to severe shortage of blood in India over 12,000 persons die every day across India as they fail to receive blood. The department of Microbiology and Biochemistry has an active role in the organisations of blood group and hemoglobin detection camp in collaboration with Gram panchayat and Zilha Parishad School of the village. This health camps has organized to meet the quick health care record blood grouping and hemoglobin of the underprivileged communities in rural areas to provide initial care and awareness to people regarding various health consequences. The NCC Department and Red Ribbon Club of the college organizes blood donation camp in collaboration with District Blood Transfusion Centre, Chandrapur. The College provides all facilities like space, furniture, Blood group testing rooms, blood donating room with good hygiene and sanitation as per the medical standard. The camp is inaugurated with a motivating session by the subject experts to make the students understanding the importance of this practice.
The Practice
The department of Microbiology and Biochemistry organizes the camp in village where school children and adults are monitored for the blood group identification and hemoglobin content. The data of blood group and hemoglobin will be recorded and same given to them for their convenience and information. The analysis of normal and abnormal hemoglobin will be done and precautionary measure, along with proper diet counselling given to those who has abnormal values of hemoglobin so that risk of anemia can be prevented. Simultaneously the digital blood group mapping of college students have been done and the data of blood group will be shared with district blood transfusion office for use in the need of time. The NCC department along with Red Ribbon Club arrange blood donation camp in collaboration with District Blood Transfusion Office, Chandrapur every year. Prior to donation, the donor Students will be screened to identify their quality of blood to be collected. The underweight and the infected persons will not be allowed to provide donations as the medical advice. Donors will be provided with scientific information regarding the blood group and its associated disease.
Evidence of Success
The college has been able to run the blood group, hemoglobin detection, digital blood group data and blood donation camp successfully for 4 years in the past 5 years (Except 2020-21 due to Covid 2nd wave). The students and faculty have contributed to the campaign by donating the blood. The participation is increasing every year and college has even received the appreciation letter from District Blood Transfusion Center. The study analysis of hemoglobin data of students and villagers has contributed significantly in maintaining the normal hemoglobin level.
Problem Encounter and resources required
- Students in the college are mostly from the rural area and they hardly had the exposure to the health related information. Awareness about health issues should be engaged.
- Most of the students are economically deprived and underprivileged background thus proper food and diet is hardly perceived. Orientation on nutrition and diet should be
- Fear and superstition is the main cause to share and receive the information.
- No proper reach of blood donation awareness among the community.
5. Information about blood related health issues, proper information of nutrition and diet and awareness about the importance of blood donation should be engaged with the help of college and community.
BEST PRACTICE 2
Mapping of Biodiversity in College Campus and Kothari and Ballarpur forest
1. To create awareness to maintain biodiversity in surrounding areas as well as college campus.
2. To increase the knowledge of students about nature which includes the differences in genes among the individuals of a species, the variety and richness of all the plant and animal species at different scales in space, locally and in region of Kothari and Ballarpur forest.
3. To provide the platform for further study related to environment and plants.
The Context
There are varieties of plants in the Botanical garden of G.N. College and in Kothari and Ballarpur forest region. The total numbers of medicinal plants in Botanical garden are 15 and in campus 200 plants species are there in college. The Kothari and Ballarpur forest are contained 450 plant species and 350 plants of different species of medicinal plant. All the students are involved in the initiative taken by the Botany department and some of the medicinal plant specimens preserve in the form of herbarium. Because of this, the interest of students for plantation is raised. They are working to save the plant species which are in the verge of extinction, cultivation houses of plants, taking care of plants, and spreading the importance of plantation and biodiversity to the society and all rural area peoples by this concept. This can only happen if we manage biodiversity as a precious resource and prevent the extinction of species.
The Practice
Maintaining biodiversity by plantation is an extension activity of this college which takes care of the various endangered plant species in the campus and allied areas. The teachers from the department of Biology including the students are working on this by projects and visits to concern areas. This activity has been started during the year
2017 and aim to expand its coverage.
Evidence of Success
- Students has aware about plant diversity.
- Students maintain the botanical garden with understanding the plant uses.
- They made the plant information display to spread awareness among the locals.
- It helped PG students for their dissertation work
- The plant QR code which is placed on plant helped to understand about their nature, common name, habitat, morphology etc.
- The digital plant data library helps to other researcher to make use in their work
- MSc. student has used this information to complete their M. Sc. Project.
Problem Encountred and Resource Required
- Collection of seasonal plant information.
- To maintain plant in summer season.
- Making of Digital Plant Data library.
