Biochemistry gives the students a variety of skills that are readily transferable and a practical understanding of laboratory work. It is a subject opted by a good number of students of the college. The department of Biochemistry of Guru Nanak College of Science, Ballarpur, aims to develop practical and technical skills in students through laboratory-based work and guide them to assist the society about health prospective.

The Biochemistry department was established in the college in the year 1988. The department has a specious and well-equipped laboratory with a staff room. Dr. G. S. Gond was appointed as a lecturer in the year 1989, since then he is working as Head of the Department. Ms. Arpana Durge was appointed as Assistant Professor in the year 2010.The Department of Biochemistry has shown its potential by participating and conducting various activities.

From the very beginning the students of the Biochemistry group has attained distinctions in academic and even extracurricular activities. This year one of the student of this group Ms. Vaishnavi Khanke secured Fifth Position in order of Merit in the B.Sc. Examination of Gondwana University, Gadchiroli.

The department conducted various activities:

• Every year the Department organizes Blood Group Detection and HB Estimation Camp at nearby villages of Ballarpur Tahshil.
• The students checked the Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar of the Non-teaching Employees of the college and make the employee aware about the risk of high BP and high blood sugar level.
• To make aware about the advanced techniques used in research laboratories and interaction of the students with scientist and to know the scope of the subject, we organize educational tours to visit the Research Laboratories, Industries and educational institutes.
• To motivate and encourage the students for good work and the students who achieved merit in the University examination in Biochemistry subject, the students are duly awarded on the occasion of College Day celebration by giving cash prize/Books.
• Students of the department enthusiastically participates in extracurricular activities like seminars, educational tours, workshop, NSS and other activities.
